On the Ball
Two contrasting opinions from Hugh Hewitt and James Dobson. Knee-jerk Romney backer Hewitt is stressing the impact of this election-
There are seven reasons for anyone to support the eventual nominee no matter who it is: The war and six Supreme Court justices over the age of 68.
Folks who want to take their ball and go home have to realize that even three SCOTUS appointments could revolutionize the way elections are handled in this country in a stroke, mandating the submission of redistricting lines to court scrutiny for "fairness."
Hewitt has been hard to read in the past year, as his pro-Romney and anti-everyone-else shtick had me debookmark him, but he's starting to come to. Romney has a shot of winning the nomination at the convention if he plays his cards right, but the odds are stacked against him at this point; it's more likely that Huckabee would be the compromise pick than Romney.
Speaking of debookmarking, here comes an MDS alert;
Here's Dr. Dobson in full rant over Blue State John-
I am deeply disappointed the Republican Party seems poised to select a nominee who did not support a Constitutional amendment to protect the institution of marriage, voted for embryonic stem-cell research to kill nascent human beings, opposed tax cuts that ended the marriage penalty, has little regard for freedom of speech, organized the Gang of 14 to preserve filibusters in judicial hearings, and has a legendary temper and often uses foul and obscene language.
The last policy point was on the "nuclear option" era; I recall that Family News in Focus radio show was riding the conservative party line to such an extent that we changed our alarm clock radio station to avoid it; they were essentially becoming Republican Talking Points in Focus. I agreed with their take on what conservatives christened the "constitutional option," but didn't want that crammed down my throat at 6:10 in the morning while waking up.
I'd rather have a 90% pro-life candidate who'd be open to appointing conservative judges than sit out and have Justice Tribe get confirmed after President Obama nominated him. 100% would be nice, but 90% beats the heck out of 2%.
Dr. Dobson can take his ball and play catch with Ann Coulter if he wants; he'll actually encourage moderates to vote for McCain and make it harder for Clinton or Obama to categorize McCain as a stooge of the fundamentalists.
Will that influence some of his listeners to sit out? Possibly. But not me; I'd rather take my ball and chuck one high and inside at some of the more egregious policy stands of the Democrats.
