We're in Texas, possibly for the last time in a long while. Eileen has a long Christmas hiatus from her current position and I can prep for next semester from my laptop anywhere, so we're visiting my in-laws in metro Houston. They're looking to sell their house and retire to Tennessee, so it may be a while before we come this way without her parents as a draw.
We took a slightly different route south than with previous trips to Texas, swinging by metro Longview to visit a high school buddy of Eileen's on our way down yesterday. A couple of the locales on the way down got a chuckle.
One county en route was Upshur county. It's good that they don't have county wide school districts like they do in Kentucky, where many of the high schools are X County High. "Upshur, up your [insert anatomical part]." Kilgore was en route as well; sports chants there would have spooked the Secret Service in the 90s.
The one that got the most fun was a small berg of Mount Enterprise. I recall saying "Don't give the Obama team any ideas, for they'll want to mount enterprise and display it in a museum."
I like the trip in from Beaumont on US-90 better, where the mileage roadsigns have Liberty winning out over China, then see Liberty losing out to Houston.
