Here's to two new members of academe, Russ Feingold and Arlen Specter. Feingold will be teaching at Marquette's law school and Snarlin' Arlen is heading to the Penn.
The WSJ was making Marquette out to be some conservative bastion, being Catholic and Joe McCarthy's alma mater. That's a cheap and innaccurate shot, given that the left-leaning Jesuits at Marquette would be more likely to have been a target of Tailgunner Joe than a supporter were they in the public eye 60 years ago. Feingold will fit right in all too well.
One interesting thought is that Feingold might wind up heading right back to Washington. Wisconsin's other Senate seat is up next year, and Herb Kohl is of an age where retirement is a real option; Kohl turns 76 next month and might opt to call it a career, especially if he can turn things over to a rather good, albeit liberal, legistator.
Wave elections wind up carrying some decent pols out to sea, and Feingold was one of those this go-round; if there is a more liberal-friendly political climate next year, he might get the Cheeseheads to send him back to Washington.
