I was at the gas station when I saw a yoga studio across the way on Ashman Circle; I can think of at least three yoga emporiums in town, one of which took over the building that housed the old barber shop that I had been getting my hair cut in since I moved to Midland when I was 5. Ted's was so old-school, I joked that the ancient cash register was Y1K compliant.
I would venture to guess that the time practicing yoga might easily challenge the time practicing Christianity in this country. That doesn't mean that there are more yoga afficianados than Christians, but someone does yoga in a way that most people don't do being a Christian. As much as pastors will encourage us to "do the stuff" of the faith, few people actively practice their faith, either by improving their knowledge of the Word and of God or by having that knowledge change how they live their hour-by-hour lives.
I have three fingers pointing back at me as I point the finger at the rest of the Body of Christ. My practice has been lacking as of late, hence the lack of the old daily Edifiers. It's not that I haven't lost my faith, it's just been a bit flabby other than Sunday mornings.
Here's a good like from Paul in 1 Timothy 4. The end of 1 Corinthians 9 was what I had in mind when I was rough-drafting this in my mind, but The 1 Timothy passage works better for this-
7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. 8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 9 This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance.
The people who gave us yoga were shooting for multiple lives to come rather than eternal life that comes from the incarnation of Christ rather than bogus reincarnations.
I need to get back into training. So do a lot of us.
