You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine. 2 Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.
I'm reminded of a recent movie trailer where a 20-something guy is being upstaged by an 50-ish party-animal dad. The dad is exactly what Paul is trying to avoid: intemperate, uncontrolled and hard to respect. One can assume the guy lacked a sound faith as well, since that's usually not a strong suit of movie-comedy party animals.
The endurance part is worth looking at. The Greek seems to point towards consistent and steadfast rather than running a Ironman. Not that getting winded walking back to the milk and cheese section at Wal-Mart is a virtue, but Paul was looking for guys who were with the program for the long haul.
