We had a baby dedication at church on Sunday. I've been thinking about the Bible and how best to consider it; the construct they used in the standard Free Meethodist dedication text seems a good place to start-
Do you accept the authority of the Old and New Testaments as the Word of God?
It doesn't specify how one is to read every verse and leaves open that some passages might well be metaphorical. However, you turn your back on the Bible at your own peril, since it seems to be our best look at how God interacted with His people over the years, and especially how Jesus interacted and preached and lived.
If it isn't authoratative, we're at square one.
