Protesters sabotaged New Dehli's main canal, shutting off the majority of the city's drinking water. The issue as hand is whether to include a farming-class Jat caste in the group of lower-caste folks in India's version of affirmative action. A quick perusal of the Wikipedia for them would have them as spiritually plebian but economically middle class with a lot of political clout.
Trying to translate caste into a Western context doesn't work all that well, I'm picturing Scandinavian-Americans trying to get minority treatment; "yeah, yabetcha we need help getting work. After Fargo, no one takes us seriously."
An old saying comes to mind-politics is the answer to who gets what, when, where and how. That seems to apply in India as well.
