The Democrats are having the ritual why-we-lost discussions along with the ritual we-really-didn't-lose Electoral College bashing a la 2000, since Clinton seems to have gotten a modest 47.7%-47.4% win in the national popular vote.
New York and Florida both have 29 electoral votes and Trump's 1.3% squeaker in his home-away-from-home is as much a win as Clinton's 21.3% win in the Empire State. That pairing gives Clinton an extra million vote advantage right there.
Only in proportional-representation countries is a majority guaranteed to rule. In seat-by-seat races, if a minority party wins its seats in squeakers while the majority party wins theirs in blow-outs, you can have a minority party get a majority of the seats. Quebec's National Assembly had that happen in 1998 where the Parti Quebecois had fewer votes than the Liberals but a majority of seats since the Liberals would win Anglophone ridings in blowouts and lose close in Francophone ones.
The Democrats are already jockeying for position for the next DNC chair, and a Howard Dean-Keith Ellison matchup is in the rumor mill, Ellison is the designated champion of the progressive wing of the party, while Dean is (times do change) the establishment choice.
The election of a black Muslim congressman would double-down on those demographics and serve as a contrast to the oft-nativist Trump. Dean is a bit more attuned to blue-collar whites and might work well if the party wants to win those Trump Democrats back.
One point being mentioned is that a party chair who's also holding office can't be an effective full-time chair. It's been done by both parties and can be done well if there is a nuts-and-bolts full-time second in command to be doing the fundraising, candidate recruitment and ground-game development while the elected official chair makes the rounds of the talk shows and other PR-ish stuff.
Trump's still hitting the tweet-deck, casting the window-breaking protests against him in Portland as "very unfair!" Pot, meet kettle.
One only hopes the protests of Wednesday night are akin to Michigan State students trashing downtown East Lansing after a loss and not some sort of progressive intifada. Or should that be infantfada?
