I've been struggling with the idea of biblical inerrancy as of late, but this thought came to me in church this morning--
Is this the best story of who God is, and especially who Jesus is, out there? Yes, no question.
Is its take on who God is and how He works, give that how generation of believers have vouched for it, likely to be better than your take on God? Yep.
Is Monday Morning Quarterbacking (that's "second-guessing" for the folks on the other side of the pond) the Bible a good career move? No, you're probably going to be wrong.
Probably?
If you think the Bible is mostly, but not 100% right, it takes a certain amount of cockiness to say that you've picked out the 2% where they got things wrong, whether that be on tithing or sexual issues or other contentious areas. Even if you're not sure if it is 100% right, it is close enough to perfect to be given the benefit of the doubt and to be treated as such.
If it is so far away from the truth that you feel comfortable second-guessing it, you're probably not comfortable with the Christian faith as we know it and have essentially started an alternative religion.
I'm starting to solve my inerrancy issue by saying that it rounds to 100% right and give it the benefit of the doubt. Of course, if it is inerrant, it is 100% right and rounds to 100% without any help.
