I haven't seen a prospective first pick in the next draft get the attention that Andrew Luck is getting this year in quite a while. LeBron James comes to mind, but the basketball lottery makes it hard for a team to tank for a particular player, since even the boobie prize in the NBA was only a 25% shot of drawing the first ball. In football, the worst shall be first, very Biblical and also very tempting to tank once your playoff hopes have been hosed.
The year Ralph Sampson was coming out of UVA was the closest to the tank-fest talk we have today. If I recall correctly, it was the teams at the bottom of the NBA that year filling their ballast tanks, sounding the klaxon and going "Dive, dive dive!" (as a piece from that era went) that gave us the modern NBA lottery, assume we even have an NBA going forward.
Meanwhile, in a battle of cellar-dwellers, we have Tim Tebow making his 2011 starting debut in Miami for the Broncos; there may be more Tebow fans from his UF days than Dolphin fans, or at least enough divided loyalties this side of West Palm Beach.
