I'm getting ready for our weekly Bible study. We're on the story of Gideon, and the stretch after God gives his stripped-down army a victory leaves a lot to be desired. He kills off one town that didn't give him supplies (Peniel) and tortures another(Sukkoth) and makes a gold vest out of the earrings of the fallen enemies.
God wasn't talking to Gideon at that point, or at least we don't have God giving the orders at that point. Gideon doesn't stop the locals from worshiping his gold vest, either.
Not exactly a great hero. However, he did rally Israel around to run off a foe, but sounds more like a bad dictator than a good one.
Gideon was humble when he was a little guy (“Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel?") but was rather nasty when he was the Big Man on the Canaan Campus.
