I didn't get to see Justin Trudeau's speech; the CBC link gives the text of all three party leader speeches. He didn't use the word "terrorism" either, and made a pitch that sounded like he's borrowing Obama's speechwriters-
Criminals cannot and will not dictate to us how we act as a nation, how we govern ourselves, or how we treat each other.
That's true, but what we've seen in the last three days is something other than your garden-variety street thug, although the dead shooter was that not that long ago before taking out his frustrations in downtown Ottawa today.
Here's where he sounds like the boss down south-
We will get answers to how and why this happened. They will be vital in preventing any future attack. And to our friends and fellow citizens in the Muslim community, Canadians know acts such as these committed in the name of Islam are an aberration of your faith. Mutual respect and admiration will help to prevent the influence of distorted ideological propaganda posing as religion.
If it's violent, it can't be real religion? If Justin's got some free time, I'd invite him down to our Tuesday afternoon study of Judges, where quite a few jars of whup-ass were applied in God's name. Or would folks like Joshua and Gideon been pitching "distorted ideological propaganda" as well?
Distorted ideological propaganda blended in with religion would be a fairer description of ISIS. However, that makes you tackle them as a subset of Islam rather than just some goons with guns in the desert.
That's not that great of a debut for young Mr. Trudeau. It sounds true to the secular ear, but Trudeau is more truthy than true here.
NDP leader Tom Mulcair played the multicultural card far better in his speech, preaching against hate without getting into a bad applicaiton of comparative religion.
Canada is shaken today but we shall not waver. We woke up this morning in a country blessed by love, diversity and peace and tomorrow we will do the same.
These acts were driven by hatred, but also designed to drive us to hate. They will not. We will stand up, we will stand together. We will persevere and we will prevail.
That sets the NDP up to take the high ground when certain folks on the right go into Islam-bashing mode (Marc Steyn, call your office). He's not quite Jack Layton in straight-shooting leftist mode, but he's more honest than the Liberals fresh prince.
