There are often multiple reasons to dislike some one or some institution. Shortly after the Oklahoma City bombing, jihadis were the likely suspect, but it was a Michigan native with anti-government and white nationalist streaks that did the bombing.
That comes to mind when I read about this mosque-shooting in Quebec over the weekend. The usual rationale would be of a nativist type that has a xenophobic dislike of Muslims. However, we've seen Muslim bomb other Muslims that they had a disagreement with. Modern jihadis have attacked a number of mosques who weren't pro-ISIS. Even in the US, a Washington mosque was attacked by Nation of Islam partisans in the 70s.
Canadian officials haven't given much detail as to what might have motivated the shooters. Rumors of "Allah Akbar" shouting by the shooter muddy the waters; that could be a jihadist going after moderates or a redneck mocking jihadi shtick.
<<< Update 4:38. The shooter seems to be the latter-
The suspect was "unfortunately known to several activists in Quebec City for his pro-Le Pen and anti-feminist positions at Laval University and on social networks,"
Le Pen being French nativist politician Marine Le Pen. Redneck doesn't translate well into French, with plouc for "yokel" showing up on this translation web site. "Cou rouge" would seem to be a literal translation, but it takes little courage to mow down innocents with only a bad taste in religions to demerit them. <<<
