I'm not much of a Trump fan, to put it mildly. I got more than my share of teasing as a kid and I have low tolerance for verbal bullies and teasing of any type. That extends to mistreatment of minorities, especially when ethnocentrism and/or racism morphs into bullying of its own.
Unfortunately, that's the president's stock in trade.
I blogged a bit ago on the Lincoln Project, a group of old-school Republicans who've refused to join Cult 45. I'm not comfortable with the trolling they do to the president, since two wrongs don't make a right. However, this Michigan member of the LP, Jeff Timmer, struck a cord.
They range from the direct to the deeply sarcastic. On Thursday, when Trump tweeted "PROSECUTORIAL MISCONDUCT" in response to the Supreme Court's ruling he doesn't have absolute immunity from a subpoena for his tax records, Timmer responded, "I see someone woke up on the gibbering barking madness side of the bed today."
When in late June, it became apparent that several cases of coronavirus were linked to a bar in East Lansing, he tweeted, "Wow. A virus immune to both people's stupidity, boredom, and political ideology. If only there were medical science to guide us. Alas." When Trump attracted a far smaller crowd than expected for a rally in Tulsa last month, Timmer said he'd seen [Foghat] tribute bands get bigger audiences.
Foghat's biggest hit was Slow Ride. The refrain "Slow ride......take it eeee-zee" is worth taking to heart.
One of Trump's tricks is to get his critics mad at him, phrasing things in ways that will get a boo-yah from his fanboys and a big boo from his critics. He wants an exchange of urinary products between the two.
However, we don't want to waste the urea on him. It's not worth ruining your anniversary, as some of his pro-Jim Crow tweets of Monday started to do to me. Best to take Foghat's advice and to not take the bait and join the barking madness.
